Last year was the warmest year on record for the U.S., according to a report recently released by the National Climatic Data Center. The report also found that 2012 was the driest year since 1988 – with 61 percent of the country experiencing mild-to-exceptional drought conditions in July.
“A picture is emerging of a world with more extreme heat,” Andrew Dessler, climate scientist at Texas A&M University, said. “Not every year will be hot, but when heat waves do occur, the heat will be more extreme. People need to begin to prepare for that future.”
